Humboldt Elementary School

Literacy Program Coordinator

CONTACT INFO: Jessica Cavas @ 708-0100 or join@ycvp.org

I. ORGANIZATIONAL PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND

Humboldt Elementary School is the proud “Home of the Pandas”. A rural community school nestled on top of a hill overlooking the town of Humboldt, Arizona, the school’s mission is: “We are a community dedicated to teaching, nurturing and supporting our students and families in a safe, respectful and responsible environment in order to ensure success in learning and life.” School enrollment is around 350 a year, grades K-5, allowing all staff a close-knit relationship with every student. The Federal Government has recognized the school as an area where students have greater need academically, due to the financial limitations of households. Despite this challenge, the school has continued to improve scores on the state assessment, receiving an “Excelling” distinction last year. The school believes that education not only opens doors, but also clears the eyes so that a vision of the future can be seen.

II. PROJECT FOCUS AREAS AND ACTIVITIES

  1. Program Development/Documentation: Develop and implement a successful plan, using District resources, to establish a sustainable Literacy program ran by volunteers. Volunteer and program information will be documented and organized to ensure sustainability of the program. Also explore options to implement a before and after-school program.
  2. Partnership Development/Community Liaison: The VISTA will work closely with the principal and multiple organizations, striving to blend a partnership focused on the needs of the students. Promote the needs of Humboldt Elementary School (HES) within organizations and community events.
  3. Volunteer Recruitment and Training: Recruit volunteers to assist K-3 teachers with reading curriculum. Ensure volunteers are trained on all aspects of the literacy program: guided reading, shared reading, independent reading, phonemic awareness and comprehension. Provide resources to volunteers so they are equipped with activities to ultimately improve the students’ reading, writing, and oral communication skills.
  4. Event Planning: The VISTA will also seek to provide more and better educational nights for parents.

Yavapai County VISTA Project

VISTA Leader

Contact Info: Jessica Cavas at join@ycvp.org or 928 708 0100

I. ORGANIZATIONAL PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND

The Yavapai County VISTA Project was created in 2006 out of the vision of a single AmeriCorps*VISTA Member. The Project's mission is: "to help build and sustain the efforts of Yavapai County service providers and community members to continually improve the quality of life across the region. We work to support efforts in creating a just and healthy community." Yavapai County is the size of New Jersey and of the 35 total communities within it's boundaries, only 8 are incorporated. The remaining 27 non-incorporated communities have limited or no public infrastructure. Each of these incorporated and unincorporated communities have specific and varied needs. Our project takes a wide view of the county's issues and focuses on those that reach and affect every community. Our projects focus on issues of substance abuse, isolation, poverty, homelessness, under engaged Youth, and an overall lack of civic engagement. The VISTAs within our project do groundbreaking and influential work. There are currently 13 VISTA members, including one VISTA Leader, growing to 20 within the next 6 months.

Facilitate on-going communication between VISTAs and other project stakeholders. Plan and coordinate regular meetings with VISTA members and other support personnel. Act as liaison between CNCS and VISTA members. Advocate on behalf of all VISTA members and member issues.
