The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America.
We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example -- the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King's character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit. |

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day a Success!!!
The Yavapai County VISTA Project, Prescott College, Open Inn Turning Point, The Coalition for Compassion and Justice and Prescott Creeks all shared the honor of hosting the FIRST ANNUAL Volunteer in Service Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day! What a great day we had.
The day began at 8:30am volunteering with The Coalition for Compassion and Justice Home Repair program. The VISTA Team as well as 5 additional volunteers spent the morning moving furniture out of a quadriplegic man's home so that new flooring could be laid.
At 1:00pm the team met at Prescott College to begin the two larger service projects for the day. We offered two service projects to the more then 100 volunteers that participated. Jessica Cavas and Ann-Marie Benz from Prescott Creeks lead a group of about 20 people to collect over 520lbs of trash from a 2 mile stretch of Miller Creek. They may have also discovered a hazardous pollutant! A mysterious ooze in the creek was identified by a volunteer- samples where taken and we are awaiting results. WAY TO GO CREEK CLEANERS!
Kyleen, of Open Inn Turning Point and Maggie lead 35 participants in the creation of a 25 foot long mural celebrating the memory of Martin Luther King and honoring the diversity of the youth living in the homeless shelter. The mural reads, "Honor similarities, Respect Differences, and Celebrate Diversity". The mural is the center piece of the new Drop Inn Teen Center to be opened in the next few months.
It was great day. We had a great group of volunteers and the day was filled with both meaningful conversation and laughter.
